BRECON-Gouesnou Twinning Association always knew the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the towns’ links would be special – and it didn’t disappoint!

We arrived, along with an U14 Brecon Corries football team on Wednesday, May 30 after a very calm crossing from Plymouth to Roscoff.

We were welcomed in the Queffelec Centre in Gouesnou with coffee and pains aux raisins. Later that morning we walked to the roundabout on Rue de Brecon to unveil a plaque for the 30th Anniversary of our two associations. It was unveiled below the oak tree which was planted 30 years ago at the start of the Twinning.

The afternoon saw a football match between an U14 Corries team and a local Gouesnou team. The young boys from the Gouesnou club set the atmosphere in the stand!! Both teams played well and at full time the score was 3-3. After a shoot-out the victory went to Brecon Corries.

Following this another sign was unveiled outside the Mairie [Town Hall] to match the one we have in Brecon [397 kms].

After the Mayor’s speech many people enjoyed the wine reception together. Thursday saw a visit to Pont L’Abbe and Quimper, visiting a museum depicting traditional Breton costumes.

On Friday we visited Oceanopolis in Brest, a huge ‘Sea World’ museum. On Saturday we were entertained with a fabulous five course celebration meal which included scallops, duck and a stunning dessert. Throughout the week there was much emphasis on the word ‘ friendship’ and there was talk of new exchanges in the future such as art groups or musical groups.

Next April a group from Gouesnou will visit Brecon to celebrate the 30th Anniversary here. Membership of the Twinning Association is open to everyone. If you are interested contact M Edwards [email protected] or Brecon 01874 622812 for more information.
