A BRECON scientist has set the bar high for other members of the Brecon University of the Third Age to match.

Dr Rhobert Lewis has been awarded an honorary fellowship of the University of South Wales for services to higher education.

Dr Lewis, who is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, was Dean of Engineering and Science at the university until he retired in 2016.

Since retiring, he has been completing the fifth edition of his Chemistry textbook, co-authored with Dr Wynne Evans, a former colleague at the University of South Wales who now works for the Open University.

Dr Lewis is a member of Brecon’s own university – the University of the Third Age, which meets regularly at Theatr Brycheiniog.

He received his honorary fellowship at a graduation ceremony at the University of South Wales in December.

Rhobert, who said he was thrilled to receive the honour, added that he was finding social and intellectual fulfilment as a member of Brecon U3A.

He urged other people aged over 50 to consider becoming members. He said: “The U3A is a very welcoming organisation and it caters for those interested in many subjects, including the sciences.”
