SATURDAY'S game against Brynmawr at a wet and windy Groe was vitally important for Builth Wells who couldn't afford to lose any more points. Brynmawr came to the Groe with a poor league record having conceded an average of 50 points a game but as the game kicked off, they showed tremendous guts and determination to keep the score down to 12-0 in the first interval. The breakthrough for Builth didn't arrive until the 18th minute when a clever box kick from Sam Corfield found John Thurston in acres of space to gather the ball and cross the line. The next score came at the end of the half, mostly due to Brynmawr's resolute defence and the Bulls unlucky decisions from the referee. John Thurston came storming into the line from his position at full back to end a move from a Builth scrum. The rain in the second half didn't ease, nor did Builth's persuance of further points, however Brynmawr's resiliance began to crumble. They conceded a penalty in the first few minutes when caught offside, Jamie Brown then converting from 40 metres. Brynmawr came back from the kick off and spent a couple of minutes in the Builth 22 until they forced the ball dead. A long Builth drop out was knocked on and they now camped on the Brynmawr line. Eventually Sam Corfield went blind from a rolling maul and enabled supporting winger, Huw Lloyd, to cross the line. Builth used the running ability of the back row and weight of the front row to punch holes in Brynmawr's defence until Gethin Davies made use of the extra space created to make a long run down the wing. Andrew and Matthew Davies combined to get the ball to Gareth Kinsey who looked certain to power over the line, but was just short. However Andrew Duggan was on hand for the simple touch down. Jamie Brown converted. Andrew got another just two minutes later with a move from the base of the scrum. This was also the platform for Builth's final score with the ball going through five sets of hands in the backs before John Thurston got his hat-trick. Builth ran out convincing 39-0 winners but unfortunately other results didn't go their way and they still have a week of anxiety before knowing the results of this season's hard and dedicated effort. Meanwhile, Builth Wells junior rugby competed in the recent Anglo/Welsh Lucton tournament in Lucton with the U11s excelling by reaching the semi-finals. The U8s and U9s narrowly missed out on a semi-final place by try count. Out of 20 pool matches, Builth Wells junior sides won 11, drew 6 and lost 3 - all in all a superb advert for the Breconshire rugby club.
