A Cradoc woman has been nominated for a major award due to her tireless work in making sure local schoolchildren eat a proper breakfast every day.

Janet Owen, has been selected as a Breakfast Club Hero finalist in the national Breakfast Club Awards for the work that she does at Cradoc Primary School.

Janet is relentless in her pursuit of the best opportunities for all children attending the club, ensuring they have a healthy breakfast every day, but also introducing other exciting activities such as den building in trees, to balloon modelling.

Janet fought to facilitate the installation of a rural playpod, which is now used by the Breakfast Club, school and the local community outside of school hours, demonstrating her passion for ensuring children enjoy outdoor experiences beyond the club.

The final winners of the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards will be announced via a web broadcast on 09 November, by the star of hit TV show Educating Yorkshire, Matt Burton.

Jan Owen, Breakfast Club Awards Hero finalist, said: “To be shortlisted for this award is a real honour. I’ve worked for the Kids Club at Cradoc for many years, so I’m delighted that my hard work has been recognised. But of course, we’d love to win the overall category and receive £1,500 for the club, plus take some of the pupils to the Houses of Parliament, which will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for them.”

Some 85% of schools now have a breakfast club, and teachers and parents look to these clubs to help with everything from attendance and attainment to tackling hunger and providing pre-school care.

The final stage of the competition will be down to a readers’ vote, so if you want to put your town on the map for all the right reasons and make a hero of Janet then your vote is crucial.

The winner will receive their award at a dedicated ceremony at the Houses of Parliament in December.

Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards spokesperson Alison Last said:

“Breakfast clubs ensure that children get the best start to the day and go into the classroom ready to learn. The people that open the school doors early every morning so that school children can eat breakfast with their friends in a friendly environment need to be recognised.

“We were very impressed with the work that Janet does at the club and wish her luck in winning the title of Breakfast Club Hero.”

The lucky winner will receive a prize that includes £1,500 for their Breakfast Club along with George ASDA school uniforms and Hasbro Gaming Bundles.
