James Evans has asked the Welsh Government to ensure that children with cystic fibrosis are provided with the medication and treatment they need.

The Brecon and Radnorshire MS said at the Senedd this week that a constituent had contacted him about new drugs that are coming out to help children with the condition.

He said: “Young Bertie, a constituent of mine, is approaching his second birthday. But at three weeks old, he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.

“The only hope his parents were given was that new treatments would prolong his life and his quality of care.”

Mr Evans asked First Minister, Mark Drakeford, what informal discussions the Welsh Government has had with NICE - the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

He also wanted to know what Mr Drakeford had contributed to consultations to make sure that no children are left without the treatment they need to ensure that their lives are extended.

He said: “That is fundamentally what we are here to do - to improve the lives of our young people.”

Mr Drakeford said he agreed with the points Mr Evans had made.

He said: “We won't have informal conversations with NICE - I don't think that will be right or proper.

“We will represent the views of the Welsh NHS and Welsh patients in the consultation exercise.

“That will reflect many of the views that have been expressed around the Chamber.”
