A WOMAN has had to be rescued from the River Usk at Brecon’s Promenade in the early hours of this morning.

The woman, who had waded into the river between the Promenade path and the Boathouse, was recovered close to the river bank and was hanging onto a a tree branch.

More than 20 firefighters from the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service were involved in the operation, at around 3am this morning.

The woman, who it’s reported had raised the alarm herself, was clinging to a branch. She has been taken to hospital.Crews who attended from Brecon, Talgarth and Hay-on-Wye, and police used throw lines to pull the woman from water.A spokesman for the fire service said: "Crews also administered medical attention to the casualty before transferring her to the care of the Ambulance Service."A life jacket, lighting, thermal imaging camera and a spine board were also used during the incident. "The Fire Service left the incident 4.44am.

A spokesman from the Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called on Thursday 20 February at approximately 03:00 to reports of a person having fallen in the river Usk in Brecon. We responded with one emergency ambulance. One patient was transported to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny.”Heavy rain and high water levels continue to pose a risk across the region and there is a yellow weather warning in force for much of south and mid Wales until 2pm today.
