Charlotte Davies, (Brecon & Radnor Express, January 25) raised questions to the council regarding the funding of further work to y Gaer and whether rent was to be paid by the educational establishments occupying these spaces.

This is something which should be made public knowledge in view of the astronomical overspend in its construction.

The report examining this overspend outlines a catalogue of errors and lack of project management for which it appears no-one is to be held responsible. For such an overspend on a building, which has brought about the downsizing of the library; a back way into the museum (thank goodness those shocking railings were removed) and shorter opening hours (initially greatly reduced), surely someone should be held accountable? Instead the report says lessons are to be learned - an expensive lesson.

Meanwhile the old library, a listed building, is allowed to stand empty and deteriorate before being sold/granted to another educational establishment. The town has already lost the well appointed tourist information centre to make way for a college learning centre. The diminished tourist information office can now be found in a side street. Not an obvious site for visitors to the town. Was this not to be part of the hub?

It does seem to be that this council’s policy is to let buildings deteriorate to such a point before deciding to close and then build anew.

Brecon has so many empty buildings in varying states of decay. How many are council owned? And now there appears to be money to improve the town. Perhaps the money would be well spent addressing the increasing number of poorly maintained buildings.
