Basketball players from the Brecon Integrated Sports Association have won a second medal at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi.

Tommy Davies from Ystradgynlais was part of a Great Britain men’s/mixed basketball team that defeated the USA by 26-20 early this morning to claim a gold medal.

It comes after Hannah Charnley from Brecon was part of the GB team that defeated India to claim a bronze medal in the women’s team event after defeats by Serbia and USA.

Tommy was celebrating his gold medal win on the final day of competition at the Special Olympics World Games, which features 7,000 athletes from around the world taking part in 24 sports.

The Games’ closing ceremony is due to take place tomorrow (Thursday) with the Great Britain teams returning to the UK on Friday.

Great Britain is being represented by 129 athletes.

Tommy, 19, captained the silver-winning Wales basketball team in the Special Olympics National Summer Games in 2018. He is a sports centre assistant and basketball and fitness training is his passion.

Hannah and Tommy were able to attend the Games thanks to fundraising by their fellow Brecon Integrated Sports Association members and many local organisations, including The Keith Morris Appeal, South Powys Disability Network Forum, Tim Belcher’s Colour Run, Brecon Jazz Festival, Talybont Bikefest and Ysgol Penmaes.
