RHAYADER Town and Llandrindod Wells are both £500 better off after reaching the second round of this season’s JD Welsh Cup.

Rhayader beat Welsh league first division Caerau Ely 4-3 last Tuesday night after the original tie had been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch the previous Saturday. Rhayader raced into a two goal lead with Richie Powell netting both and Tom Bethell added a third with a free-kick from out on the left.

The visitors pulled one back but Bethell headed his second after Ashley Jones had hit the bar. Caerau Ely scored either side of half-time to put the tie in the balance but that was how it remained despite both sides having chances.

Llandrindod had progressed 3-2 at Swansea Alliance League leaders, Merthyr Saints where they staged a superb fight back having trailed 2-0.

Kieran Davies reduced the deficit after Elliot Williams saw his header saved and player-boss, Gareth Jones set Robbie Nicholls up for the equaliser. And it was Nicholls who snatched the winner scoring from halfway following a poor clearance from the Merthyr ‘keeper.

Llandrindod are on the road again in round two away at llantwit Major while Rhayader welcome Goytre to The Weirglodd.
