KEVIN Jones and Jack Biggs were on target in the first half as Hay St Marys kicked off the new Spar Mid Wales League first division season with a 2-0 home victory against last season’s runners-up, Knighton Town.

Veteran striker, Jones broke the deadlock when Biggs headed down Brendan Hackett’s corner and Biggs then netted with a wonder 30 yard strike. Hay had been the better side in the first half but as the game wore on, Knighton took control.

The Radnor Robins had a strong penalty shout turned down as the bombarded the Hay goal but the home back four were outstanding in keeping a clean sheet to hang on to the spoils.

Hay collected a further point in a 2-2 draw at Llanidloes Town.

Matty Tong had given The Saints an interval lead after Jack Biggs pulled the ball back but Alex Jones levelled for Llanidloes after the break.

Steve Morgan restored Hay’s lead from a Biggs through ball against the run of play but Rhys Evans grabbed a second with a header for The Daffs as it ended all square, although ‘keeper, Tom Bevan made several fine saves to deny Llanidloes a winner.

Knighton Town, many’s tip for the title, are yet to get a point on the board as they were beaten 3-0 at home by Berriew on Friday night. Matt Mumford scored twice with Will Gittins also on target for Berriew as The Robins slipped to back to back defeats.
