Christ College 1sts 36 Malvern 5THE Christ College 1st XV boys returned to Brecon on Thursday to begin their pre-season rugby training. This preparation was well rewarded with an exciting home win over Malvern College on Saturday in front of a large crowd.

Huw Thomas dictated the game at fly half ensuring quality ball was distributed to the wide channels. Dragons regional squad player Olly Lewis and Charlie East cut intelligent lines either as decoy runners or with the ball. Charlie scored a try after good interplay in the midfield.

Tom Richards at full back was quality both in attack and with his brave no nonsense defence, he was rewarded with a hat trick of tries. The Christ College pack continually drove into the bigger Malvern forwards to create the quick ball for scrum half Will Bush to link with his backs.

In the first half the backs made several key breaks in midfield and scored two excellent tries through well timed passes to the support.

Huw Thomas kicked the conversions plus a penalty to ensure a 17 point cushion at half time.

In the second half the Malvern team attacked with pace and tried to keep the ball alive as much as possible and tried to break down the Christ College defensive wall. Christ College closed the game out with good ball retention and solid defending.

Captain Henry Morgan Gervis led by example and disrupted the opposition in contact. Blues regional player number 8 Archie Trevethan was dangerous in attack and was a continual danger man at the fringes and scored a try also. This was an exciting start to the season for the 1st XV which bodes well for the matches ahead.
