A Baptist chapel nestled high up in the Black Mountains is to celebrate its 250th anniversary this weekend.

Penyrheol Baptist Chapel will hold a special service this Sunday at 6pm to mark the occasion.

The story of the chapel, which sits few miles directly south of Llanigon, began 250 years ago when Baptist dissenters met at a farmhouse nestled in the Black Mountains above Tregoyd.

This weekend’s anniversary event, which is open to all, will include a variety of readings and music.

Musicians will perform, covering different musical styles of the period, including a duet written by Marcelo sung by Lucy Green and Catherine Hughes accompanied by Paul Sweeting. Open Door, led by Jo and Adrian Carter from Brecon, will accompany the congregation with traditional hymns and introduce new Christian music. There will also be other contributions from members and friends of the chapel.

The restored stable will be the venue for a buffet supper after the service.

Aspects of the history of Penyrheol Chapel are included in a recently published book called ‘Remarkable Churches Near Hay-on-Wye’ launched at Hay Festival.

Chapel members told the Brecon & Radnor Express that the chapel welcomes visitors at any time and the doors are kept open in the summer months.
