High street bank Santander is to close its branches in two towns in Brecon and Radnorshire.

The branches in Llandrindod and Builth Wells will close in May next year.

The decision has been criticised by local politicians who say rural customers are in danger of being left behind behind the banking industry.

Santander said when its branches at Builth and Llandrindod close in May next year the nearest ones will be in Brecon and Newtown and it said it is committed to maintaining employment.

Llandrindod South ward county councillor Peter Roberts said staff are already shared between the two part time branches.

The Liberal Democrat said: "I’m very concerned that Santander is closing both branches, as they’ve split the staff between them for quite some time and they open on different days.

"A lot of people will feel completely isolated from banking services and unable to talk to anyone face to face."

The Spanish owned bank said it was closing lesser used branches but Santander current account holders will be able to use the Post Office for cash and cheque deposits, withdrawals and to check their account balance.

It said it was also committed to maintaining employment and retaining colleagues by offering suitable alternative roles.
