Hay Horse Show Equine Influenza policy
Hay Horse Show organisers have said all horses and ponies must have up-to-date flu vaccinations following confirmed cases of equine flu in Kington.
The show’s committee said it came to the decision after receiving advice from the British Horse Society and vets.
A spokesman for the show said all passports and vaccination records will be checked before horses, ponies or donkeys are allowed to be unloaded.
The show has said owners must ensure that all horses and ponies have received two injections for primary vaccination against equine influenza which are given “no less than 21 days and no more than 91 days apart”.
The spokesman said: “Only these two injections need to have been given before a horse or pony can attend.
“In addition, if sufficient time has elapsed, a first booster inject must be given no less than 150 days and no more than 215 days after the second injection of the primary vaccination”.
He also said that booster injections must be given at intervals of not more than one year apart and not within seven days of the show.
The show’s organisers have advised that if any equines’ last vaccination was more than six months ago, the owners discuss an additional booster vaccination with their vet.
The spokesman said: “All passports and vaccination records will be checked before any horse, pony or donkey is unloaded.
“Anyone who does not have a valid certificate will be told to leave the show ground. On arrival, please bring your proof to the secretaries tent, before you unload any animal, to be checked.
“We are a responsible show and have the welfare of the animals at the forefront of our minds. Thank you for your cooperation.”
