The values that underpin sport lie at the heart of the Christian faith, says the Archbishop in Wales in his message to mark National Sports Sunday this weekend (May 17).
Sport is about well-being, team work and mutual support to achieve a common goal, says Archbishop John Davies. He also commends the role of sports chaplains for connecting sport with faith.
The Archbishop, who describes himself as an “armchair sportsman”, says, “Well-being, support, thinking of others are values that lie at the heart of the Christian faith. Being part of a sports team can help us understand how important it is to be part of a team in the community – to bring help, support, compassion and love to others.”
Warren Evans, CEO Of Sports Chaplaincy UK, says, “National Sports Sunday this year is not an event, but an opportunity to pray for the community of sport with a renewed sense of focus. That’s why I’m inviting you to take part, whether that’s online as a church fellowship or just as a single believer lamenting the absence of sport.
“With sports games suspended, gyms closed, staff feeling uncertain about the future and players frustrated with being unable to participate, we have an opportunity to remember sport is more than an activity, it’s a community we can bless and pray for.”
