This pioneering guide aimed at transforming conversations around death, dying, and grief was published in April of this year and has already got the community talking.

Despite the cultural discomfort surrounding death, Berni’s mission is clear: to debunk the myths, foster meaningful discussions, and ensure that people can articulate their wishes with confidence.

Having seen the negative impact of not talking about death from years of working with families as an End of Life Doula and Funeral Celebrant, Berni saw the real importance of opening up the conversation.

"I hesitated, as many self-published authors do, wondering whether I should stay in my own lane," said Berni. "But this work is too important to keep quiet.”

The book is a comprehensive and compassionate resource designed to help individuals plan and navigate the most profound moments of life with autonomy, choice, and authenticity.

It is accessible to adult of all ages, providing practical guidance, thought-provoking insights, and space for readers to consider their legacy and end-of-life preferences.Yet it is written in an understandable and conversational tone with no jargon, relatable real-life stories and explanations of medical or legal terminology that can sometimes overcomplicate the process of End of Life care.

A notable aspect of the book’s journey is its grassroots launch. Without a large-scale marketing campaign, Berni opted for a softer introduction—allowing time for organic growth and reader engagement.

“The reception has been fantastic,” said Berni. “I have done a few readings and Q&A’s which has allowed me the opportunity to give practical advice and hear the stories of the readers who have benefitted from my book.”

Berni's hands-on approach extends to how the book is available: while it is print-on-demand via Amazon, she encourages direct purchases through her personal website (https://subscribepage.io/thebook). Buying directly allows her to add a personal touch with handwritten notes, avoid third-party commission fees, and donate proceeds to charity.

This year, contributions will support Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS), and from October, donations will extend to UK Men’s Shed when Berni assumes her role as President of the Association of Independent Celebrants (AOIC).

Beyond its insightful guidance, My Life, My Death, My Wishes features contributions from renowned poets Pam Ayres, Sean Hughes, and Donna Ashworth, as well as quotes from leading voices in the funeral and healthcare sectors—including celebrated author Kathryn Mannix (With The End in Mind and Listen).

Berni had the opportunity to meet Kathryn at an event hosted at Bristol University, when she was ‘in conversation’ – Dying For Beginners and gifted her a signed copy. She was also able to personally deliver a copy to Donna Ashworth after her talk at Hay Festival about her poetry (To The Women), where the pair had the opportunity to talk and exchanged signed books!

The book’s momentum continues to grow.

Berni was recently invited as an expert guest on BBC Radio Wales' Advice Hour, with Behnaz Akhgar, where she discussed the themes of My Life, My Death, My Wishes and the role of Independent Celebrants.

With ongoing efforts to partner with independent bookstores, host readings, and engage in public conversations, Berni remains committed to making death planning accessible, empowering, and deeply human.
