NINE years ago Peter Barker was preparing to spend two days on the roof of Parliament in protest at the government’s inaction on climate change.

Now he’s preparing to launch into fiction with the publication of his first novel, ‘System Error, Invitation to Revolution’.

Set nine years in the future as the world’s ecological and economic systems start to break down, it’s the story of a young computer hacker battling against the immense power of the super rich.

Peter, who lives in Llangammarch Wells, is a Greenpeace volunteer who set up a local campaigning group in Hay-on-Wye, as well as taking part in actions such as their occupation of the roof of the Palace of Westminster in 2009.

“There are many ways to bring about change,” he says, “and I think it’s valuable to envision and write about, how the world may be if we carry on our current trajectory.

“Although my book focuses more on the financial predicament capitalism has led us to, it’s also about the exploitation of people and planet.”

Peter will be signing copies of his book and answering questions at the launch in the Globe, Hay-on-Wye, on Sunday (July 22) from 2pm.
