POWYS County Council could be set to axe support for cricket and lawn bowls across Brecon and Radnorshire but must strike a compromise with two clubs.

Councillors deferred a decision on axing the regular 'fine turf' maintenance programme it carries out on 10 bowling greens and three cricket squares in both counties, last December.

At the cabinet's meeting, which was getting underway at County Hall, Llandrindod Wells, as The Brecon & Radnor Express was going to press on Tuesday afternoon (April 23), councillors were being recommended to proceed with cutting the maintenance programme from July 1 this year - potentially saving it £100,000 a year.

However the council has also drawn up additional plans which meet legal obligations to Talgarth and Llandrindod Wells bowling clubs under long standing lease agreements the clubs hold.
