TWO months after losing their beloved boxer brother, a family are taking comfort in the news that he hasn’t just given three people a fighting chance through organ donation, four people have benefited from the tragedy.
Ystradgynlais ‘gentle giant’ Jason Morgan spent a week fighting for his life after a fall down a stairs left him with severe brain damage. But, before the 43-year-old lost his biggest battle, his family knew that if, given the choice, the father-of-two would want to donate his organs.
Younger brother Darren, also a well-known local boxer, said that they had spoken about it and he knew that Jason would want to help others though organ donation.
“We didn’t really think twice about it, really,” said the 40-year-old. “He didn’t carry a donar card, but we all knew it was what he would have wanted.”
Initially, the family believed that three people had been given a new lease of life, benefiting from his liver, pancreas and kidney. But, his mother Val received a letter informing that four people have been given a fighting chance, thanks to the village legend affectionately known as Chez.
She said: “To know that part of him has helped other live on is a wonderful gift. I am so proud of him.”
A man in his 60s received a kidney transplant after a seven-year wait, as did a man in his 40s who had waited for a year and a half. Two further men have been given a new lease of life after a liver and pancreas transplant.
Darren said that the family would love to know how the recipients are doing, after their transplants.
He said: “We have given permission for the families to have my mother’s address. If they wanted to contact us, we would like to know how their lives have changed thanks to Jason.”
