MORE than 750 people turned up on Watton fields in Brecon in May this year for the fourth Rorkes Drift Rally.
The event is inspired by the battle featured in the famous film Zulu starring Michael Caine, so a lot a people dressed in character as Zulu warriors, nurses, maids and soldiers of the South Wales Borderers (24th of foot) and could be seen over the weekend in Brecon town centre.
Everyone had a great weekend with rock bands, male voice choirs, pipe and drums bands, belly dancers and loads more events happening, including a wedding blessing performed by Bishop Paul Michael Knight.
The aim of the day is to get people to experience the brilliant military history in Brecon and also raise money for the Poppy Appeal, Audley Court, Fisher House, N.A.B.D. and the Brecon regimental museum of The Royal Welsh.
To date almost £5,000 has been given to the museum for these wonderful charities, with more donations expected to be made from future events through the year.
Amanda Miles, one of the organisers, said: “It was a pleasure to present the regimental museum’s curator Richard Davies with a cheque for £2,050 during our visit to Brecon in May. We just want to thank the people of Brecon for the welcome and thank you to the museum for the brilliant work they do in keeping the town’s military history alive and we are honoured to be able to play a little part in supporting it.”
