Brecon Floral Society has chosen Brecon Mountain Rescue as its charity for 2026, with members presenting a £250 donation to the volunteer-led service.

The cheque was handed over by society president Vera Davies to mountain rescue volunteer Mark Jones at a recent meeting.

Mark gave members an insight into the vital work carried out by the team, explaining that fundraising is essential to keep the service running.

Brecon Mountain Rescue has 45 volunteers and covers a wide area, stretching from the Bannau Brycheiniog to Machynlleth. The service is provided free of charge and responds to a wide range of incidents.

Mark said around 20 per cent of mountain rescue volunteers are women, 20 per cent are former service personnel, with the remainder coming from all walks of life.

The team operates as a community organisation and costs around £60,000 a year to run. So far this year, volunteers have responded to 70 call-outs.

Brecon Floral Society meets on the last Thursday of each month at 2pm (excluding August and December) at the Barn, Brynich.

Membership is open to everyone – you do not have to be a flower arranger to attend. Visitors can enjoy demonstrations, socialise and even have the chance to win one of the floral arrangements to take home.
