The Brecon Grammar Schools Association (BGSA) recently celebrated its 76th annual dinner at Cradoc Golf Club - an evening that marked a notable moment in the association’s long history.
Originally formed by former pupils of Brecon Boys' Grammar School in the late 1940s, the group came together to reconnect, honour those who gave their lives during the Second World War, and build lasting ties with the school. In more recent years, the association merged with former pupils of the Girls’ Grammar School to reflect the combined heritage of Brecon’s grammar school community.
This year’s dinner marked a historic milestone for the association: for the very first time in its 76-year history, both the President and Vice President positions are held by former pupils of the Girls’ Grammar School.
Kathryn Easton (née Williams), a resident of Pont Wilym, Brecon and a former Girls’ Grammar School pupil, was installed as President. She takes over from Win Griffiths, former MP and alumnus of both Cradoc Road and Penlan Boys’ Grammar Schools. Liz Poraj-Wilczynska (née Powell), also a Brecon resident and former Girls’ Grammar pupil, was appointed Vice President.
Both Kathryn and Liz went on to teach at Brecon High School during the 1970s, continuing their ties with education and the local community.
The BGSA remains committed to supporting Brecon High School through active participation in the annual Remembrance Service and by giving out more than £600 in awards each year.
In another recent development, the association has embraced the digital age by launching a dedicated Facebook page, aimed at helping former pupils of Brecon's Boys’ and Girls’ Grammar Schools reconnect, share memories, and stay up to date with news and events. All former students are warmly invited to join the group and be part of this growing online network.
