A STALWART of The Brecon & Radnor Express has retired after working at the paper for more than a third of its existence.
Assistant general manager Malcolm Morris, who began his career as a 15-year-old apprentice compositor at the weekly newspaper's former print works in Dan y Gaer Road, Brecon, retired 50 years on from starting at the paper, in April, 1964.
The 65-year-old, of Llanfaes, Brecon, is retiring as assistant general manager ahead of the Brecon based title celebrating its 125th anniversary this October.
Malcolm, who in 1992 helped oversee the broadsheet's transition from hot metal printing to computerised production, worked his way through various management roles including deputy foreman and production manager to general manager, joint general manager with Sandie Wickens and his current role, after switching to part time work over the last year.
He said: "I'm totally convinced this paper will go on for another 50 years, so long as the stories people want to read are printed."
Over the 50 years Malcolm has worked with six general managers, six editors and more than 200 staff and for three family run companies. The title is today owned by Sir Ray Tindle's Tindle Newspapers.
