Brecon Town Council has signed the Armed Forces Covenant, marking its support for serving personnel, veterans, reservists and military families in the town.
The covenant was signed at a ceremony held at The Guildhall on Monday, June 22, attended by councillors, the town clerk, members of the Armed Forces community and invited guests.
The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, including the bereaved, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy, and society they serve with their lives.
Mayor of Brecon, Cllr Sian Drinan, said: “It was my great privilege to be present at the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant. It is a recognition of the importance of the Armed Forces within our Brecon community and a reflection of the esteem in which they are held. Diolch, Thank you, Dhanyabad, to all those who serve, both now and in the past.”
The council says it recognises the important role that veterans, reservists and military families play within the local community and looks forward to strengthening relationships with Armed Forces organisations and support networks in the years ahead.
The covenant is based on two key principles: that members of the Armed Forces community, whether Regular or Reserve, those who have served in the past, and their families, should face no disadvantage compared with other citizens in accessing public and commercial services, and that special consideration may be appropriate for those who have made the greatest sacrifices.
