A Builth Wells businessman is set to take on a demanding two-day hiking challenge to raise funds for Mid & North Powys Mind, a charity supporting mental health across the region.

On July 30 and 31, Toby Weale will hike more than 43 miles from Aberystwyth to Newbridge-on-Wye, carrying all his equipment and supplies on his back. Accompanied by friends, Toby will camp overnight en route to complete the journey.

Toby, managing director of the travel company Highway Adventures, which he founded last year, has long been passionate about outdoor challenges and community causes. When he learned of the charity’s funding needs, he was eager to help.

Mid & North Powys Mind offers a wide range of free services, including talking therapies such as counselling and CBT, peer support groups, training sessions, bereavement support, and youth services for 11 to 25-year-olds. The charity also provides an ‘in-work’ support programme to help individuals maintain employment while managing their mental health.

The charity has recently secured funding to purchase and renovate the Dance Centre in Llandrindod Wells, creating a permanent, welcoming space for the community. However, additional funds are needed to complete essential fixtures and furnishings to make the new premises fully functional.

“Mind is a charity that’s close to my heart and they are doing such fantastic work in my community and all across Mid and North Powys,” said Toby.

“Sometimes we all need a bit of help and someone to talk to, and our local team are providing that support and lots more. I just love outdoor challenges and can’t wait to get going, and I hope it raises as much money as possible for Mid & North Powys Mind because they really need it to keep on doing what they’re doing.

“This challenge is going to be a tough one but definitely worth it and I’m really looking forward to sharing every step of the way with everyone, blisters and all!”

The hiking party will begin their trek from Aberystwyth at around 6am on July 30, aiming to reach their final destination, the New Inn pub in Newbridge-on-Wye, by 6pm the following day. Toby’s parents, Martin and Jess Weale, owners of local coach companies Weales Wheels and JJ Travels, will provide support throughout the challenge.
