STAFF at Dan Yr Ogof, the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, are delighted to be finally re-opening the popular attraction this weekend.

Most indoor tourist attractions were given the thumbs up to re-open recently, but the Welsh Government told Dan Yr Ogof to stay shut - a moved which “mystified” workers.

But at last the Welsh Government announced that Dan Yr Ogof could welcome visitors once again.

Health Minister Vaughan Gething gave the go-ahead at the government’s press conference yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon.

As he revealed underground attractions could reopen, Mr Gething said: “I want to thank these attractions for working with us to ensure measures are in place to protect the public from the risk of coronavirus.”

Ashford Price, from the showcaves, said: “Everyone at Dan Yr Ogof Caves is delighted to be reopening on Saturday.

“We are still mystified as to why all the other showcaves had been allowed to reopen with no problems.

“Professor John Gunn, the showcaves’ scientific advisor, could not understand the reasoning behind the Welsh Government’s decision.”

Mr Price added: “We have literally had hundreds of emails wishing us well and we would like to thank all the readers of the Brecon and Radnor Express for their support.

“Sadly the Welsh Government’s late decision has resulted in the loss of more than 40 jobs at the caves.

“We have just five weeks of the main holiday period left to try and take enough money to survive the coming winter so any help from the other tourism operators would be greatly appreciated.”
