BRECON Cathedral is facing a bill of thousands of pounds after a stained glass window was damaged in an attempted break-in.

Raiders tried to get into the historic building on Wednesday night with a failed attempt at prising open the bulky main door with a metal bar.

A stone was also used to smash a stained-glass window.

Dean Reverend Paul Shackerley is pictured with the damaged window that appears to date from 1887 and is dedicated to the memory of two individuals. A spokesman for the cathedral said though no-one had managed to gain entry but the damage to the small part of the stained glass window was likely to cost thousands of pounds to repair.

Dyfed-Powys Police is investigating and a spokeswoman said: “Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of an attempted burglary at Brecon Cathedral. “Sometime overnight on Wednesday, September 20 a window was broken and someone tried to gain entry.

“Police are investigating the incident.

“Anyone with information is urged to call police by calling 101.”
