Outdoor enthusiasts are being invited to take on a unique night-time challenge in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park this September, with a moonlit ascent of South Wales' highest peak.
The Youth Adventure Trust has launched Summit Under Stars, a fundraising event that will see participants hike up Pen y Fan after dark in aid of vulnerable young people across Wiltshire and Somerset.
Set for Friday, September 26, the challenge will begin at 9pm, giving walkers the rare chance to climb the 886-metre mountain beneath the star-studded skies of one of the UK’s few International Dark Sky Reserves.
From the summit, participants may be treated to views of the Milky Way and meteor showers – a reward for both the climb and the cause.
Mark Davey, CEO of the Youth Adventure Trust, said: “Summit Under Stars is more than just a hike – it’s a powerful symbol of the journey our programme participants go through. Every step taken up Pen y Fan helps us support vulnerable teenagers who are climbing their own personal mountains every day.”
Funds raised from the event will support the charity’s long-term programmes, which use outdoor experiences to help 11 to 16-year-olds build confidence and life skills.
The event is open to solo participants and teams, with the route expected to be completed by midnight.
Sponsored by outdoor retailer Ellis Brigham, the event will be fully supported, with participants using Black Diamond head torches provided for the climb. Backing also comes from the Merrell Hiking Club, who are offering discounts and equipment loans.
There are two entry options available: participants can either commit to raising £250 in sponsorship (with a £20 refundable registration fee), or pay a flat £200 to self-fund their place. Numbers are limited so early registration is recommended.
