Christ College Brecon has been named a finalist in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2025.
The school is shortlisted in the category of Regional Independent School of the Year: Central.
It has also been recognised in the Tatler Schools Guide 2026, which profiles leading independent schools across the UK.
Parents and pupils describe Christ College as a supportive environment with a strong balance of academic and co-curricular opportunities.
One of the students described the school as “a wholesome place”, with a parent saying: “There’s encouragement and support in all its aspects.”
Another parent said: “Christ College is an inclusive school where pupils can thrive across academia, sports, music, drama and art.”
The school’s head, Gareth Pearson, has also been shortlisted for Best Head of a Public School in the 2026 Tatler Schools Awards. The nomination comes in what will be his final year in post.
Long-serving staff member David Grant has also been nominated for a Lifetime Achievement Award - another proud moment for the school community.
A spokesperson for the school said: “Often working behind the scenes, Mr Grant is one of the unsung heroes of Christ College, having been a part of the school community for over 30 years.
“His unwavering dedication supports nearly every corner of school life — from joining the school as a Chemistry teacher and exams officer, to now ensuring that the technicalities of events and productions run seamlessly and designing and building incredible sets for our drama performances.
“The annual DRG Cross Country Run, named in his honour, remains a highlight of the school calendar—one in which he still actively participates. Beyond school life, David had also volunteered with the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, further reflecting his deep commitment to community service.
“This nomination is a fitting tribute to someone who has consistently gone above and beyond for his community.”
Founded in 1541 by Henry VIII, Christ College is one of the oldest schools in Wales. Its pupils still wear the ‘h’ logo in reference to the founder. The school’s Latin motto translates as “They achieve because they believe they can.”
