A STAND-UP comedy night is being held in Llandrindod Wells in aid of Mid Powys Mind on Saturday, May 11 at Pavilion Mid Wales, Spa Road, Llandrindod Wells.

The event is to help raise awareness and as well as funds for the Mid Powys Mind ‘Suicide Prevention Pledge’.

The event brings one of Wales’ best-known comedians, Mike Bubbins, to Llandrindod Wells fresh from two recent appearances on BBC Two.

Mike was part of the ensemble cast alongside Sally Phillips who appeared in ‘Tourist Trap’ and is the co-writer and performer in cult hit ‘The Unexplainers’ with Eggsy from Goldie Lookie Chain.

As an ex-teacher and Elvis personator Mike is truly at home in front of an audience and he has a brilliant storytelling style that is supported by a some brilliantly sharp observations on life in South Wales.

Also appearing is a comedian from Llandrindod Wells, Shaun Griffiths, who first discovered stand-up comedy through workshops held at Mid Powys Mind.

Since then he has performed elsewhere in the UK, including a festival in Manchester. Completing the line-up will be three other professional comedians from the burgeoning Welsh comedy scene.

The organiser of the event, Owen Griffkin, is a mental health participation officer working with PAVO in Llandrindod Wells who used to be a stand-up comedian.

He said: “Laughter is one of the best ways we can help relieve stress and make connections with other people.

“I thought it would be the perfect way to raise funds and help spread the message about the Suicide Prevention Pledge that Mid Powys Mind have created.”

The Suicide Prevention Pledge was created by the staff at Mid Powys Mind to help encourage men to talk when they are having suicidal thoughts and to make it easier to do so.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 and when it happens in rural areas like Powys it can affect the entire community. The pledge has received national attention, including a launch at The Senedd, and support from people including Assembly Member Eluned Morgan, former Wales footballer Neville Southall and Labour’s shadow chancellor John McDonnell.
