A community fundraising event has raised over £1000 for victims of the Ukraine crisis.
The communities of Aberedw, Rhulen and Llanbardarn came together to raise funds for the humanitarian crisis on Sunday, March 13 in the village hall.
Dozens of members of the local community gathered to enjoy afternoon tea, with games and activities for children, plus stands to sell books and bric-a-brac. Handmade bunting, courtesy of the village WI members, and flags pained by local children adorned the room and tables.
The afternoon tea was a huge buffet with something for everyone and ‘donate what you can collection boxes’ were available on every table.
The generosity of the locals had no limits, with everything being donated from raffle prizes to delicious home-cooked cakes. The Builth Wells Co-op kindly provided refreshments and the contents of a hamper for the raffle.
Even though the event was organised to support the people of Ukraine, it was also a chance for people to catch up and reconnect with neighbours. It was the first opportunity for everyone to come together in a long time, and chatter and laughter filled the air and could be heard the length of the village.
So far, an incredible £1065.28 has been raised and donations are still coming in.
There were also several valuable items donated which are going to be sold outside of the event to raise even more money. “
Nikki Jones, event organiser, said: “It was heart-warming to see the village come together to support such a worthwhile cause. The event perfectly demonstrated the power of working together as a community.”
