A FORMER Grange Hill star and his mother are among the more than 120 candidates fighting for a seat on Powys County Council.

Gareth Phillips, who starred in the long running BBC children's TV school serial, is standing as an independent candidate in Brecon's St John ward while his mother, Mary Phillips hopes to be elected as the Conservative candidate in the neighbouring St Mary ward.

Mr Phillips, who played Nick Williams in the comprehensive school drama between 1990 and 1992, will battle it out with two existing town councillors, Labour's Matthew Dorrance and Liberal Democrat Mark Morgan.
