A MEMBER of Powys council’s cabinet has resigned after a school he was a governor of breached council policy to fund school transport.
Councillor Darren Mayor has resigned from his £29,000 a year post as cabinet member for property, building and housing, following a report by the Wales Audit Office (WAO).
The spending watchdog had raised concerns Llanfyllin High School was using delegated school funding to subsidise home to school transport.
Cllr Mayor, who represents the Llanwddyn ward in Montgomeryshire, is a member of the school’s governing body.
Powys council announced Cllr Mayor’s resignation after the cabinet had discussed the WAO report on Tuesday.
Council leader Barry Thomas said: "Following yesterday’s cabinet decision Councillor Mayor has offered and I have accepted his resignation from the cabinet.
"As a member of a school’s governing body that used school funding to subsidise home to school transport in clear breach of a council policy, I understand and respect his decision. It is the honourable and correct course of action and demonstrates his integrity."
Cllr Thomas also thanked Cllr Mayor for his work on the 10 member cabinet. He had previously been the member for adult social services, when the council was heavily criticised for failings in its home care.
