AN online poll has backed calls for a significant reduction in the number of county councillors in Powys.

We asked users of this website if they believed the number of county councillors should be reduced to less than 64, and a massive 98 per cent of those voting agreed.

Options to keep the number of county councillors at the current 73 or reduce the council to 64 members, as agreed by the Welsh Government, were supported by just two per cent of those voting.

The poll was prompted by a decision of the county council to ask the independent Boundary Commission for Wales to examine the impact of reducing the council's membership to less than 64 councillors.

Councillors called for the review after a motion was put forward by Liberal Democrat group leader John Morris asking the authority to 'urge' Welsh local government minister Leslie Griffiths to make a significant cut to its membership.
