LIBRARIES in Powys could be forced to close for up to a day a week - if the county council is to keep all of them open. The council cabinet is proposing to slash the opening hours of all 17 libraries it runs in Powys by 20 per cent. For larger libraries like Brecon and Llandrindod Wells that could mean them closing for nine or seven hours a week - potentially a full day. Some smaller libraries could have their opening times reduced to less than 10 hours a week. It also plans changing the mobile library from a fortnightly to monthly service. The council is now seeking the public's views on its proposals or alternative plans to close between five and 11 libraries and even scrapping the existing mobile service altogether. It would then offer a special service for people unable to travel. No libraries have been identified for closure.
