Residents have been struggling to travel after snow fell across Brecon and Radnorshire over night.
Ystradgynlais has been one of the worst hit areas with police warning residents in and around the Swansea Valley to only travel if “absolutely necessary”.
Ystradgynlais Police posted a picture on Twitter from inside one of the force cars which shows the cold weather conditions just after 8pm yesterday.
The tweet said: “Roads are treacherous around Ystradgynlais this evening. Please only go out if absolutely necessary and be careful as reports of vehicles stuck in Coelbren, Neath Road Ystradgynlais and many other locations.”
There were also delays to recycling and waste collection in the town this morning as Powys County Council refuse lorries struggled to reach residents.
This morning a spokesman for the Powys recycling team said: “Snow and ice has impacted the waste and recycling services in the Ystradgynlais area this morning.
“Whilst roads are clearing, the pavements are covered with snow and freezing ice. We will catch up as soon as it’s safe to do so.”
The TrawsCymru T6 and T6X buses, which serve between Brecon and Swansea, stopped operating from 8.30pm yesterday as a result of the snow in the town.
However, the N.A.T. Group operated bus services were able to resume at 11am today.
A spokesman for the group apologised for the inconvenience but thanked customers for their patience.
The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning, the least severe type, for snow at 9.30pm last night which remained in place until 10am today.
The weather warning covered most of Breconshire and Radnorshire, especially in higher up areas like near the Storey Arms.
Brecon Mountain Rescue Team tweeted this morning to say travel last night was difficult on the A470 and that, this morning, larger vehicles had become stuck at a section of road just north of the Storey Arms, known locally as the RAC Bends.
The tweet said: “More snow overnight is making travel difficult in the Brecon Beacons. Reports from team members that lorries are stuck on the A470 at RAC corner, north of Storey Arms.”
The mountain rescue team, who assisted Dyfed-Powys Police in freeing drivers who were stuck in their vehicles in the national park, also warned about snow settling on the back roads and in the hills last night.
Meanwhile Traffic Wales, which is owned by the Welsh Government’s Trunk Road Agency, issued a warning at 9.22pm yesterday to say the A470 was closed at the junction of A459, known locally as the Hirwaun Junction, due to “severe weather conditions”.
Residents in the Llandrindod Wells area took to Facebook between 4am and 7am today to report that there were two inches of snow which had settled on the A44 from Llandegley leading to Hereford, with standing water from Eardisley onward.
Snow had started falling around the border between Radnorshire and Hereford yesterday around 10pm.
Residents around Crai also posted on Facebook this morning to show roads near the village which were completely white with snow, meanwhile Llangynidr mountain was said to be impassible at around 6am today with cars turning around to find alternative routes.
Drivers who use the A470 can check the road conditions via the Traffic Wales traffic cameras, which can be accessed by clicking here.
While the camera at Pont ar Daf shows that there is snow on the section of the A470, it has now been cleared and gritted.
However the snow and ice is not the only weather to be hampering resident in Powys.
A yellow weather warning is still in place in some areas like Brecon, Crickhowell, Llanwrtyd Wells, Presteigne, and Llandrindod Wells for rain until 10pm today.
Hay-on-Wye, Knighton and Kington, which are also all covered by the warning, have flood alerts in place as a result of the rain on the river Wye, the river Arrow and the river Teme.
Dyfed-Powys Police tweeted just before 9am today to warn drivers of flooding just outside of Presteigne.
Dyfed-Powys Police reported that areas around Presteigne including the B4355, which leads from the town to Norton, and another which is known locally as Coombe Corner, have been blocked by flooding.
Radnorshire NPT tweeted at 11am today: “Due to adverse weather conditions, please bear in mind that the roads are extremely wet and holding a lot of water.
“Take caution when driving through surface water and take your time. Be considerate of other road users and watch your speed.”
