Des Lally handed out cheques of more than £30,000 each to his two chosen charities after completing his year-long challenge of walking up and down Pen y Fan 365 times in one year.

Christ College in Brecon hosted a celebration evening on Tuesday, April 16 at which Des handed out cheques for £30,320.13 to representatives of Help for Heroes and Cancer Research UK.

Gareth Pearson, Christ College head teacher, welcomed the many guests and supporters of Des’ Pen y Fan 365 challenge and expressed how proud the school was of the ex Christ College pupil’s achievement.

Martin Like, from adventure shop Likes of Brecon, gave the vote of thanks to Des on behalf of the Brecon community and expressed his awe at how resilient and mentally strong Des has had to be to complete such a physical challenge.

Present to accept the cheque on behalf of Help for Heroes was Shelley Elgin, community recovery manager, and Jim Whitworth, a military veteran who told the audience about the support available from the charity.

Lynne Eagles, senior local fundraising manager, accepted the cheque on behalf of Cancer Research UK and delighted the guests with a ‘Ditty for Des’.

As a memento of his achievement, Christ College Old Breconian’s Association presented Des with a canvas caricature of Des, by Oddgods.
