Hundreds of people turned out at Brecon Canal Basin on Friday, December 12 to mark 225 years since the canal’s first historic cargo journey.

Festivities included a lantern parade along the canal, with illuminated canoes and kayaks making their way from the playing fields to the basin. One boat carried a glowing swan lantern, while participants on foot added to the spectacle with a horse lantern and an impressive otter.

The Brecon Canal Basin event marked the final night of a series of festive celebrations organised by The Canal & River Trust. Lantern processions and illuminated displays retraced the route of the first barge carrying coal from Gilwern to Brecon, which arrived at the basin on Christmas Eve 1800.

Over five nights, the towpath came alive as residents visited to enjoy the sculptures and lights. The celebrations passed through Gilwern on December 8, Llangattock on December 9, Llangynidr on December 10, Talybont on December 11, and concluded at Brecon Basin on December 12, highlighting the rich heritage of Gilwern, Llangattock, Llangynidr, Talybont, Pencelli, and Brecon.

Theatr Brycheiniog welcomed visitors with refreshments and large displays, while a big screen showcased the history of the canal. The Brecon Shanty Crew entertained the large crowd with live performances throughout the evening.

Cultural organisation Brecon Story posted to their social media, saying: “A fabulously wholesome evening had by all tonight at the Light up the Canal event, 225 years of Brecon Canal marked. Beautiful lanterns and lights, a wonderful sense of community, a great performance from Brecon Shanty Crew and it was very heartwarming to see the event so well attended. Thank you Brecon!”
