An Easter walk in the Brecon Beacons took a nasty turn after a dog fell 60 feet from a hill and had to be rescued.

On Good Friday morning, Longtown Mountain Rescue Team were called out to Gilwern Hill, on the south east corner of the national park, to reports that a dog had fallen over a cliff edge.

The owner and members of the public had started a search but due to the seriousness of the terrain, had rightly called for the team’s assistance.

After setting up a rope system and abseiling down to the area where the dog had fallen, a team member encountered the stricken pooch. Salty, the Jack Russell/dachshund cross, was shaken but thankfully otherwise unharmed.

Although looking a little sheepish, Salty was unharmed after he was brought to safety by the mountain rescue team (Longtown Mountain Rescue Team)

A spokesperson for Longtown Mountain Rescue Team said: “We sent a rope team and a vehicle to scene to assess the situation, with the rest of the team on standby if need. On arrival, a rope system was set up allowing one of our members to abseil into the area that he had fallen.

“We are happy to report that Salty was found alive and well at the bottom in a big pile of brambles. And after a thorough check over was no worse for his fall! Salty is one lucky dog and we wish him the best!”
