A BUSINESS has been set up in Llangynidr which aims to produce educational science kits for primary school children.

The business, Elementary Sciences, was set up during British Science Week 2019 (March 8-17), and aims to bring a love of science to young children.

The business was started by mother-of-four and former teacher, Michelle Williams, after her six-year old daughter expressed an interest in science, but found that there were no quality, reusable science kits which were appropriate for this age group. The kit is based around the four elements – water, earth, fire, and air – and is designed to encourage a life-long love of and interest in science.

Commenting on how she and husband Mark set up the business, Michelle said: “Whilst designing the kits, my daughter asked if she could play with the equipment on her own too.

“When I saw her take what she had learnt and design her own experiments as well – it was then I knew that this could work as a business.”

This comes following the report from the Welcome Trust, which found that 58% of classes across all primary school year groups in Wales do not even get two hours of science lessons a week.

The business specifically hopes to tackle concerns that interest in science is lost in children before they even read secondary school, and particularly with young girls, who are often deterred from pursuing science from a young age.
