School pupils spent World Book Day helping to sort through an incredible number of donations for Ukrainian refugees.

On Thursday, March 3, members of Hay-on-Wye’s School Council and Criw Cymraeg helped sort the fantastic amount of donations that had arrived in school from families and friends, following an appeal on behalf of Hay, Brecon & Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees in support of the people of Ukraine.

Masses of children’s and adults’ toiletries, medicines and powdered baby milk are currently on their way to the Polish-Ukraine border, thanks to the generosity of our caring community. One of the Yr.6 pupils said, “It is nice to do something practical to try and help.”

Behind the photograph of pupils in World Book Day dress, can be seen bags and boxes , all sorted and labelled, in readiness for collection.

Mr Richard Morris, head teacher of Hay-on-Wye CP School, said he was moved by the huge support shown by the school community and how much the pupils had gained in understanding and awareness of the plight of refugees in general by helping with this vital cause.
