CHILDREN at Mount Street Nursery and Infant School are celebrating receiving their sixth award under the Powys Healthy Schools Scheme.

During the summer term, the school in Brecon received The Welsh Network of Healthy School Scheme’s National Quality Award (NQA).

Schools that achieve the NQA are recognised for implementing wellbeing initiatives that benefit their pupils.

To mark their achievement the school was presented with a plaque which marks their 2018 award as well as their five previous awards, which they received in 2002, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2014.

Earlier this year two assessors visited the school for two days and spoke with the staff, pupils, parents and governors as well as outside agencies who work with the school.

They also observed teaching sessions both indoors and outdoors, the breakfast club and lunchtimes and playtimes.

The assessors wrote in their report: “It was very evident at all times that the school is a caring, happy environment, where staff are a dedicated team offering opportunities for pupils to learn and play together.

“Learning is promoted through a creative and challenging curriculum, with outdoor activities and lots of hand-on experiences. A high priority is given to personal and social development and emotional wellbeing.”

Shan Kenchington, the school’s headteacher said she was “very proud” of the school’s achievement and she put it down to the school being “such a happy place to learn and work.”

The school celebrated their achievement with a picnic on the school field on a very sunny day.
