PUPILS at Clyro Church in Wales Primary School have been learning how to become budding Alan Sugars – and managed to turn a profit of £250.
As part of their entrepreneurial project, all the school’s pupils – from reception to Year 6 – planned, designed, costed out and made their own wares with an initial stake of £2 each.
The children then sold their goods on one day last month to parents, governors and members of the local community. Money-making projects the pupils took part in included car washing, selling waffles with a variety of toppings, making and selling lemonade, producing and selling copies of their own fitness DVD ‘Clyro’s Got The Moves’, selling lucky squares and designing a Treasure Hunt game.
They also made and sold chocolate treats, became artists and sold artworks with a Welsh theme, made soap which they sold as well as ice creams and running other stalls. Local businesses were invited along on the day to put up stalls exhibiting their business to show pupils what they could aspire to. These included Willmott-Dixon Building contractors, The Wye Local, Hay Nails & Beauty, JG Performance Gym, Cleanbright and Brilleywood Livery Service.
After taking out their two pounds plus expenses, the pupils found they had made a profit of £252.54. For their eforts they were runners-up in the Enterprise Troopers regional final and will now go on to the national final.
Deputy head Sinead Griffiths said: “One of the new strands in the New Curriculum for Wales teaches pupils to be enterprising, creative contributors. As part of this, the staff planned the entrepreneurial day so that the pupils could connect and apply their knowledge and skills to create ideas and products, think creatively to solve problems, lead and play different roles in teams effectively and responsibly, give their energy and skills so that other people will benefit, ready to play a full part in life.
“It was a very busy and incredibly enjoyable experience for all of the pupils and after taking out all of their two pounds and expenses, the pupils made a profit of £252.54. The money will be used to buy new resources for the new school after our move into new premises last month.”
