THURSDAY, January 25 is likely to be a date that junior pupils in Ysgol Y Mynydd Du will remember.
Having spent a term learning about the Stuart era, the pupils were transported back in time to enjoy an exciting Stuart feast. Decorated tables adorned with candles, ivy and wooden cutlery, set the scene for their lavish banquet. Pies, pasties, fruit cake and poached pears were among the tasty treats made by the children (as part of their DT projects) especially for the occasion.
Following the feast, the pupils enjoyed playing a variety of traditional Stuart games such as Hood-man blind, skittles and cards. However, it was perhaps, the afternoon which provided the most excitement of the day – a re-enactment of the Great Fire of London!
Models of Stuart houses were arranged as a London street in 1666, complete with the infamous bakery where the sparks first took hold. This fantastic opportunity, to witness first-hand how the fire spread so quickly from house to house, was made possible by the assistance of the local fire department who ensured the fire was safely put out. The firefighters later hosted a question-and answer-session with the children and gave them a fire safety talk.
The memorable day was a fitting way to conclude the Stuart topic as the school looks forward to moving to their new building at the end of February.
