An elderly man has died after a crash closed a busy street in the middle of Ystradgynlais.
Police cordoned off Brecon Road outside the entrance to The Welfare Hall after the two-vehicle collision, which involved a silver Toyota Avensis and a grey Honda Civic, at about 11am on Tuesday (July 17).
Witnesses said they saw paramedics attending to an injured person on the road and an air ambulance was called.
Police, a fire engine and two ambulances were also attended the scene and two people, a man and a woman, were taken to Morriston Hospital. The man, who was 85 years old, was later confirmed to have died. The names of the man and woman have not yet been released.
The emergency services left about two and a half hours after the initial reports of the collision but the road was shut for the remainder of the afternoon.
A man calling himself Fayaz at the PC Doctor computer business in Brecon Road said the whole incident had lasted for about “two to three hours”.
He said: “I didn’t see much but obviously the road has been closed off for several hours. I saw and heard the air ambulance, so obviously it was quite serious.”
Cath Shannon, the box office manager at The Welfare Hall, said: “It happened right outside here but I wasn’t able to see much. The road being closed did mean we couldn’t use our front entrance, but we opened up the back and people have been able to come into the venue that way.
“I heard someone was flown to hospital by air ambulance and the road has been closed for several hours, although the emergency services have gone now.”
