The Beacons Orchestra is preparing for its first summer concert after forming less than a year ago.
The orchestra, which is believed to be the first resident amateur orchestra in Brecon, will perform at St Mary’s Church on Saturday, June 27 at 7:30pm.
The group held its first rehearsal last September and has already grown to 39 players, most of whom live in or around the Brecon area.
In under a year, the group has already begun to establish links within the wider community.
In its first nine months, the orchestra has already been invited by Brecon Singers to take part in a workshop, while Kensington Baptist Church also asked the group to perform during last year's Brecon with Bells On event.
The concert will feature a programme of well-known orchestral works, including Verdi’s Nabucco Overture, Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1 and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”, conducted by Emily Singh.
There are also plans to build on early links with local music organisations, including work with South Powys Youth Music next spring.
The orchestra says it is keen to keep growing and is still welcoming new players, particularly upper strings and brass. Musicians of all standards are encouraged to get in touch.
Chair of The Beacons Orchestra Laura Kostoris said: “It’s been a really promising start, with a sense that the orchestra could fill a niche in the community. We welcome players of all standards.'
Tickets for the summer concert cost £12.50, with free admission for under-21s. They are available to purchase online at www.thebeaconsorchestra.com or on the door.

The orchestra has thanked Brecon Town Council and The Audrey Tyler Trust for their support.
