James Evans is pressing the Welsh Government to help householders insure their homes against the risk of flooding.

The Brecon and Radnorshire MS asked at the Senedd what the Government is doing to support communities hit by recurring floods.

He said he has heard accounts from constituents who are struggling to get insurance following incidents of flooding.

Mr Evans said some properties have not even been flooded, but as they fall within a particular postcode area they are classed as being at high risk.

He said: “These people have significantly less choice of insurance providers, often paying a lot more for premiums as there are few options for them to shop around.

“They are fearful of making even small insurance claims for fear of losing their insurance altogether.”

Mr Evans wanted to know what support the Government give to people facing “this impossible situation”.

Climate Change Minister Julie James told Mr Evans: “We have announced a record level of investment of more than £214 million over the next three years to help protect at least 45,000 homes from flood risk.”

She said there is a specialist insurance scheme called Flood Re which can help people get flood insurance.

Ms James said she appreciates that following flood incidents, it can be more expensive to obtain insurance cover.

But she said that’s a matter in which the Government have no power to intervene as the insurance industry is not devolved.
