Frankly, 2020 has been a stinker. From the pandemic to the re-emergence of Brexit negotiations, the past 12 months has provided little joy; other than the much needed heroes of the NHS and Sir Captain Tom.
With the word ’Brexit’ being uttered almost 500m times a day according to estimates, during the season to be jolly, British families are coming together during the season to be jolly, to put a collective ban on the words that remind us of the very worst of 2020, in order to salvage one last dosage of merriment on Christmas Day.
New national research commissioned by supermarket specialist app, Ubamarket, has shown that 29% of those from Wales are imposing a ban on the words ’Brexit’ and ’Covid’ around Christmas dinner this year. Banishing the worst of 2020 as taboo, the research has also found that to ease the misery of the previous 12 months, a further sixth of families from Wales are having the most lavish Christmas dinner ever, spending the most on the centrepiece meal that they have ever done before.
Key Statistics:
29% from Wales - 628,000 - agreed that this Christmas, they are banning the words ‘Covid’ and ‘Brexit’ from the dinner table
15% from Wales - 326,000 - agreed that in order to make up for 2020, they are spending the most they have ever done on Christmas dinner this year
Will Broome, CEO of Ubamarket, thanks those key workers who have been a beacon of hope during 2020, said, " We don’t need anyone to tell us that 2020 has been a rotten year. In amongst the dark times however, there have been a few shining lights that have come to the fore. NHS heroes and other key workers such as Supermarket teams have been amazing for galvanising our spirit.
"These heroes have been essential to our way of life.
Supermarket workers for one have allowed us to enjoy food on our tables every night, despite what was going on around us. Even despite new Covid strains and Brexit disruptions on the horizon, thanks to their work, we have been able to still put together Christmas meals that will tantalise our taste buds and allow us to forget the worst of 2020. For those millions of Brits that want to forget Covid and Brexit around the table, I say ’Hear Hear’!"
