A BRECONSHIRE farmer died after the vehicle he was driving was involved in a road traffic collision on the A483 just outside Llanwrtyd Wells on Saturday afternoon, August 9.

Dyfed Powys Police confirmed the deceased man was 90-year-old William John Brynley Powell, known locally as Bryn, who had lived in the parish of Abergwesyn, near Llanwrtyd, all his life.

A call was received at 3.55pm to reports of a collision involving two vehicles.

Mr Powell died at the scene and the next of kin were informed.

A passenger in the same vehicle was taken to hospital, along with the driver and passenger of the other car.

They were all having their injuries assessed.

The road was closed from Beulah in the east to all vehicles, and from Cynghordy in the west to cars and from Llandovery for large vehicles.

Police would like to thank members of the public who stopped to assist the people in the vehicles and would like to ask for anyone else who saw the collision, and may be able to provide information, to call them on 101.

Mr Powell was a traditional Welsh hill farmer and was a proud Welshman and Welsh speaker, who also had a passion for driving.

Family members said Mr Powell would drive to Llandovery twice a week to buy freshly baked bread and would have a lunch in the town, which is where he had been on the day.

There were two more road crashes on Saturday, including another one in Powys, on the A4113 in Knighton.

The incident occurred on Ludlow Road and involved a collision between a heavy goods vehicle and a car at around 2pm.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital with what were believed to be life threatening injuries, while the other passengers were taken to hospital to be assessed, but their injuries were not thought to be serious.

The main road and side roads were closed from the Bron Hir Estate to Milebrook in Knighton and were expected to reopen later that evening.

A third crash, on the A477 in Pembrokeshire, between two vehicles resulted in the death of one of the drivers at the scene.
