British Wool is marking its 75th anniversary this autumn - and Brecon will be one of the places where local people can join the celebrations.
The farmer-owned cooperative, which represents more than 30,000 sheep farmers across the UK, was founded in 1950 to ensure fair prices for fleece and promote British wool to the world. Since then, British sheep have produced more than 2.5 billion kilograms of fleece, supplying the textile industry with wool for carpets, furnishings and clothing.
As part of its milestone year, British Wool is opening the doors of its regional depots, including Brecon, to give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at how wool is collected, graded and prepared for market.
The Brecon Depot open day takes place on Thursday, October 2, from 11am to 3pm, at Unit A, Ffrwdgrech Industrial Estate. Visitors can expect guided tours, demonstrations and refreshments.
Andrew Hogley, CEO at British Wool, said: “Whether you're a sheep farmer, industry partner, student, or simply interested in the story of British Wool, join us for guided tours, demonstrations, refreshments, and a chance to learn more about how British Wool is working for farmers.
“Owned by approximately 30,000 sheep farmers in the UK, British Wool collects, grades, markets and sells British wool on behalf of its members to the international textile industry for use in flooring, furnishings and apparel.
“British wool isn’t just a legacy fibre, it’s a material for the future, and is gaining new relevance in a world increasingly concerned with environmental impact.”
This special anniversary event is a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at your local depot, meet the team, and see first-hand how your wool is graded, handled, and prepared for market.
